Not long ago, I wrote an article about the 10 best laptops for medical students. Having graduated and started working as a doctor, I think I can give you some solid advice on what to look for in a laptop. But first…
What should doctors consider when buying a new laptop?
There are many factors that make certain laptops more suitable than others: portability; display; storage; RAM; battery life; connectivity options such as USB 3.0, HDMI and VGA ports etc.; hard drive speed (5400 rpm vs 7200 rpm); optical drive (DVD writer or not); warranty period and customer service etc. All those things matter, but let’s start with screen size .
Doctor’s needs – screen size and docking stations
For medical students, I recommended 13″ laptops that are portable enough to carry around every day, but have a good-enough display to watch movies and use multi-media applications. However, for doctors I recommend something bigger – 14″ or 15.6″ laptop with at least Full HD (1920×1080) resolution. You can get such laptops for $400-$700 which makes them the most popular choice among physicians .
Just like many of you, doctors spend hours sitting in front of their laptop screens working on pre-recorded videos and tutorials; reviewing x-rays, CT scans and MRI images etc.; writing reports and dictations; reading EKGs and other patient data Gaming Laptops etc. Other than visual appeal and more comfortable viewing experience (bigger screen = bigger fonts and more space to work with), having a decent size display also ensures the text is legible. For example, try to read this article on a 14″ laptop .
It’s not convenient, is it? I know my eyesight isn’t as good as it used to be so I can’t tell you how annoying it is for me working with such tiny letters all day long. Unfortunately, that’s what many doctors do – they use laptops smaller than 15.6″ because their employers don’t provide them with newer machines or because they just prefer something cheaper and more portable.
What if your laptop doesn’t have an HDMI port and no docking station?
If you want to go from sitting in your office chair to standing, or if you take patient notes during your rounds on the ward, trying to write them on a small keyboard attached to a tiny display isn’t the most convenient way to work. I know many doctors that do that, but I also know they would prefer something bigger and better.
Not everyone needs an HDMI port (also known as “digital video port” or “high definition multimedia interface”), but having one is useful because it gives you additional options – for example, hooking up an external monitor which means you can work with two screens instead of just one; transferring data between two computers or attaching storage devices like USB drives etc. So if your laptop doesn’t have HDMI out , make sure it has at least USB 3.0 ports .
Top 7 Best Laptops for Doctors In 2024
Even though they are not as common as USB 2.0 ports, having at least one USB 3.0 port is getting more and more important because of the speed – they transfer data up to 10 times faster that their predecessors! As I’m writing this article on my laptop, which has two USB 3.0 ports, I can confirm it’s much faster to copy files from one hard drive to another or even load big video files. So if your laptop doesn’t have USB 3.0 , make sure it has at least USB 2.0 ports .
If you plan on looking for a Best Laptops for Doctors (see our recommendations here ), make sure it has VGA output or DisplayPort.
